Thurs 2nd Feb 2023 – World Wetlands Day

  • 2nd February 20232nd February 2023
  • by admin

The weather held for us and we had a wonderful hour or so in the wetlands this afternoon. Pupils from both St Patrick’s Comprehensive (https://www.stpatrickscomprehensive.ie/) and Gaelscoil Donncha Rua (https://gdr.ie/). For me the highlight was when Ruairí from LAWPRO (https://lawaters.ie/) explained the sweet smell of otter (madra uisce) excrement! By passing some around 🙂

(PS. If you have photos and are posting them online please let us know and we will link to them. Thanks).

Sun 4th Dec 2022 A chilly Wetlands

  • 4th December 20224th December 2022

Found the water in the ponds crystal clear and no sign of the chalky marl. It was dry and sunny today at 5 C but felt much much colder with an icy occasional breeze.

The rubbish is start to accumulate around various areas again but nowhere near as bad as the Town Park.

A chilly Dec morning at the Wetlands

Sadly the pond in the Town Park is looking in a very run down way

Well I’d been in Mayo for the Summer so it was great to get back to walking through the wetlands. The ponds were fuller than when I last visited in Summer and much of the reeds have been cleared.

Sun 10th July 2022 – Sunny walk

Had a lovely walk in the hot sunshine through the wetlands today. Saw a few large blue dragonflies and a smaller brown one flying around the small pond and the bull rushes are magnificient in the large pond. The large grassland area which was being taken over by willows is now a lovely varied meadow. The ponds are incredibly low though.

My sister was with me and took thee lovely photos.
