World Wetlands Day which takes place this Wednesday, 2nd February 2022.
To mark the day we will be hosting a low key event at the Shannon Town Community Wetlands site at lunchtime (13:00hrs) for about 1 hour.
The event will be focused on this year’s theme ‘Wetlands Action for People and Nature’ and will explore the biodiversity of the site and the role of the local community in developing and sustaining the site.
The event will be focused on wetland habitat type, local onsite biodiversity and the role wetlands play to support and sustain life helping us better understand why wetlands are so important for people and for the biodiversity.
All are welcome but please feel under no obligation to attend. Please bring along suitable clothing for the weather and your wellington boots if you can make.
Had a frost last night but still warmer and drier than usual for the time of year. Here’s a 360 4K video of the Wetlands. Enjoy.
Lovely and sunny today as I walked through the wetlands. Hard to believe its mid-November! Remember this is a 360 4K video so you can look in any direction 🙂
Here’s a two-part 4K 360 video of a walk through the wetlands today. I was surprised by how much scrub land had been cleared with just rushes starting to grow up.
Here’ a 360 4K video of my monthly walk through the wetlands.
Below is a photo Jimmy Doyle grabbed on his phone at lunch time in the wetland. . We think it is an emperor dragonfly, they apparently like newly established wetlands. We had spotted one a couple of weeks ago but this is the 1st picture we managed.
“The Emperor Dragonfly (Anax imperator) is the biggest dragonfly to be found in Ireland. It is between 7 and 8cm (3-3.5 inches) long. The Emperor Dragonfly was first recorded in Ireland as recently as 2000, an impressive insect, which gives a master class in aerobatics!” …
Micheál did a wonderful job on his first biodiversity session with the youngest Gaelscoil classes today. It was fun and informative for the adults and children alike. It was obvious how much time and effort he put into the preparation. Attached are a selection of images which give some of the flavour of the day. (There will be another session tomorrow)
Lovely walk pity I kept getting the date wrong in the video! Select high def and use your mouse when viewing in Youtube 🙂
